Needles when your Head is Pounding

Acupuncture is used by millions in the U.S. to relieve tension, anxiety, and even pain. It is also widely used as treatment for headache relief and migraines. For many, it may be disconcerting that you can relieve headache pain and migraines by having needles put into your head, ear, neck, and body, but it has helped hundreds of people who suffer weekly or daily. If you suffer from migraines, research and consider the healing power of acupuncture.

Acupuncture is an ancient Oriental treatment where thin, solid needles are inserted into specific acupuncture points on the body. There are multiple reasons for the effectiveness of this treatment. Oriental medicine notes that acupuncture helps restore the body’s “qi,” or energy, and re-creates balances within the body. Western scientific studies speculate that acupuncture treatment stimulates the brain, thus releasing endorphins into the body and relieving pain. There is also speculation that acupuncture can help release other natural body chemicals, such as hormones, into the body, thus boosting one’s immune system.

There have been numerous studies on the effectiveness of acupuncture with the growing demand for it. For instance, the World Health Organization has recently recognized the effectiveness of acupuncture in relation to more than 30 diseases or illnesses, from sports-related injuries or health problems to allergies. With more than 10,000 licensed acupuncture practitioners in the U.S., and with medical doctors and healthcare professionals seeking acupuncture certification, it is clear that acupuncture is a reliable treatment for a number of health-related issues.

In regards to headaches, studies have shown that if you have chronic headaches or migraines, those receiving treatment regularly over a long period of time saw dramatic improvements in the frequency and pain of their headaches. Not only did they stop having as many headaches, they also visited their doctors less for the pain and used fewer medications. The National Institute of Health also noted that acupuncture is a safe and reliable additional treatment or alternative treatment for headaches. More often than not, a more comprehensive program – one that includes acupuncture as well as medicine and physician visits – is seen as more effective in treating chronic conditions like migraines and back pain. Moreover, with long term acupuncture treatment, some studies have shown long-lasting effects and not just temporary relief. This makes acupuncture a unique alternative treatment, since many alternative health practices often deliver temporary results.

Overall, if you suffer from chronic headaches or migraines, you should consider acupuncture as a promising alternative treatment that could help you live a more normal life. This treatment, in conjunction with typical Western medications, can reduce pain and frequency of these headaches, but acupuncture is not for everyone so research your options carefully before deciding on a course of action.
