Lack of Education Causes Digestive System Disorders to Flourish
Talk to the average middle school child and you might find a child well versed in fractions, division and the square root system, and she or he might even have cracked the spine of a classic or two, but when it comes to health education, specifically with regard to digestive system disorders, and all bets are off. It appears as though the hot button topic of sex education has superseded any other kind of health education in the schools, and plentiful are the kids who are blissfully unaware that the digestive system actually begins with the mouth and ends with the anus.
This lack of education causes digestive system disorders to flourish, and since middle school kids turn into high school grads who eventually go out on their own, it is not surprising that many are clueless when it comes to dealing with some of the most commonly seen disorders. Perhaps experienced by everyone at one point or another, constipation is the kind of disorder that affects the lower gastrointestinal tract yet kids and young adults have not received the kind of well rounded health education necessary to deal with this usually temporary condition of the digestive system and instead of using gentle, healthy methods the temptation to reach for the harsh chemical that is known to do more harm than good is quickly yielded to.
Children will do what they are taught by the adults in their lives, and with so many parents reaching for pills to make constipation and associated digestive system disorders go away – rather than seeking to eliminate the cause – the next generation is bound to imitate this behavior, unless educators find a way to step into the gap. Of course, considering that the lack of education in today’s public school with respect to digestive system disorders is not likely to be corrected, it will make it hard to anticipate how tomorrow’s grownups are going to fare, other than to anticipate a flourishing of these ailments.
Sadly, even those schools that do offer a well developed health education curriculum oftentimes fail to include natural health care training that would make many a harsh over the counter chemical unnecessary. After all, what might be accomplished with a mild herbal laxative will most likely sought to be overcome with a chemical compound that is far too extensive in its gastrointestinal invasiveness. On the flipside, today’s children who are facing this lack of education will be tomorrow’s adults who might be tempted to fall for the first well written sales pitch of an herbal supplement manufacturer who might not be selling the real thing but instead simply running a fly by night outfit specializing in the occasional weak concoctions for profit.
As children continue to attend school on a daily basis, it is imperative that parents make up for the lack of education that causes digestive system disorders to flourish and instead of reaching for the over the counter medications and pills, parents will be better served to model healthy lifestyle choices, nutritional intake options, and also herbal laxative solutions.
