Alternative Therapies for Diabetes

If you have Diabetes you may want to investigate some of the alternative therapies that are available. Of course, you want to be sure that you are healthy enough to participate in them before you begin. Never turn your back on traditional therapies when you are not managing your Diabetes well. Instead, try to find a healthy balance between traditional and alternative management of Diabetes.

Some doctors will recommend that you try out some alternative therapies for Diabetes. A few of the more popular ones are Acupuncture, Biofeedback, Guided Imagery and megavitamin therapy. Be sure that you do research before you start any of these alternative therapies and consult your physician as well.

Acupuncture is an Eastern technique that has been used for centuries to help with chronic pain. Many Diabetics suffer from nerve damage that produces painful joints and limbs. Acupuncture which works to balance out yin (cold, slow, passive) with yang (hot, excited, active). A series of metallic, solid thin needles are inserted into the body and minimum to no pain is felt from these insertions. Repeated treatments are carried out with the goal being to strike proper balance in the body and mind between yin and yang.

Biofeedback is another method that can be used to help with the side effects of Diabetes. It involves measuring body functions with a machine that reports what is happening at that moment inside of the body. The physiological information is supposed to help the person realize that they have control over the physical processes of their bodies.

Guided Imagery teaches people to relax by encouraging them to think about images that are peaceful and calm. By focusing on these images the focus on the illness is removed and positive healthy thoughts of controlling the illness are supposed to emerge.

Megavitamin therapy involves taking a regiment of vitamins to strengthen the body in an attempt to keep Diabetes at bay. Some of the main minerals and herbs that are recommended are Chromium, Magnesium, and Vanadium.

Chromium is often used to increase the glucose tolerance factor. This helps with the production of insulin. A lack of Magnesium may cause blood glucose control to fail. It is the lack of Magnesium that some scientists think stops the pancreas from secreting insulin. By adding in Magnesium insulin secretion may increase. Vanadium works to steady blood glucose levels but it is also toxic to the liver so it is something that might be best left out of your vitamin regiment.

Other alternative therapies, such as yoga and meditation can also help with the management of Diabetes. Focusing on the body and mind can help Diabetics gain control over diet and increase their exercise at the same time. Yoga also may help with some of the aches and pains that occur with nerve damage.

It is important to stay positive and have an open mind when it comes to Diabetes treatment. Do research and stay well informed on the disease so that you can get the best treatment possible. Diabetes can not be cured but you can manage it to a point that does not hinder your life.
