How to Use Essential Oils Safely

Essential Oils Safely

Essential oils are great to use in aromatherapy and for massage therapy, but it is incredibly important to incorporate safe practices when using them. Though natural chemicals, essential oils are extremely concentrated. I personally err on the side of caution, when it comes to the use of essential oils.  And there are some people who are more liberal then I am willing to be.

Never use essential oils undiluted. Lavender and tea tree oils are said to be able to be used undiluted, but I personally won’t take the risk. Even these two “safe” essential oils can be toxic at high concentrations and you never know if you are going to build an allergic reaction to it. There is nothing worse then getting contact dermatitis, which is itchy and painful.

Essential oils are typically put into a diffuser when used with aromatherapy.  When used in massage, the oils are diluted in carrier oils such as sweet almond, olive oil, or other natural oils. A small spot test should be done on an arm with a diluted oil, before it is spread over your body.  This will help to indicate, if you are sensitive to it.

Furthermore, never use essential oils on mucus membranes or take them internally. Large doses of concentrated oils can be toxic to your system.

Children and pregnant women should never touch essential oils. Again you don’t want to risk an allergic reaction. Furthermore some of the essential oils can be extremely dangerous to an unborn child. When we place anything onto our skin, a certain amount of it is absorbed.  This is no different with essential oils.  Unborn children can then potentially be exposed.

Asthma sufferers need to exercise caution, also, when it comes to essential oils used in aromatherapy. Beware that some oils could trigger an asthma attack.

Different people can react to different oils, so there is no specific standard on this. One person may have problems with cinnamon, while another may have an issue with lavender.

Aromatherapy is great for you, especially when you use natural essential oils over man made scents. You can find your mood is lifted or you can feel calmed down. Ultimately, essential oils can help you a lot, but it is necessary to use them safely.
