As we grow older, our skin starts coming out with different growths and spots. Skin tags are one such product of ageing. Besides just getting older, skin tags can appear for other reasons – the results of diabetes and obesity, for example. Friction from your clothes rubbing against your skin. Hormonal changes such as those that occur during pregnancy or from a decrease in libido or other disruptions that imbalance your hormones can lead to these unwanted skin growths.

Also known as Acrochordons, skin tags look like small growths hanging with a thin stalk of flesh from the surface of your skin. These fleshy bumps are not pretty in appearance and can cause a lot of mental discomfort. Skin tags can appear at many different places on the body. The common areas are necklines, below the breasts, underarms, groin etc.

Skin tags can show up in different sizes. Small tags may appear in a bunch, while large tags may appear alone. In size, small tags of about one mm to big ones measuring up to a cm are typical.

When a skin tag grows, is it cancerous?

This is a difficult question to answer, as people perceive different growths as skin tags. Traditionally, skin tags happen in the armpits and around the neck. Skin tags are benign growths of the skin that are absolutely skin-colored. A benign growth is not cancerous.

Patients often ask doctors to examine certain growths on the face, and around the eyelids as skin tags. Typically, these are not skin tags, but are oftentimes warts or other types of growths like seborrhea keratosis or DPN’s – dermatosis papulosa nigra.

These types of benign growths can have color to them, like black and brown, and oftentimes can cause some concern to a patient, as it may look suspiciously like a melanoma. DPN’s and seborrhea keratosis are benign growths that are not skin cancers. They can be treated cosmetically, but they do not require any treatment.

If you do find any unexpected growths on your skin, do check it out with your doctor.
