Surprisingly enough, many veterinarians are finding that the owners of their patients are asking for information about animal acupuncture. The Chinese have practiced this form of healing since ancient times, and it has had incredible results on many house pets, such as cats and dogs, and even on larger animals, such as horses. If you have found that acupuncture has worked for you, you may also want to consider this treatment technique if your pet is suffering from pain or illness that is chronic and debilitating.

Although procedures are highly controversial, you may significantly prolong your pet’s life by using acupuncture. When you are responsible for another being’s life, however, there is much to consider medically, so do your research and speak with trained professionals before deciding if acupuncture is right for you and your pet.

Acupuncture for an animal is similar to the techniques used for a human. Like with humans, the needles are very small, so your pet should feel no pain or discomfort. Your veterinarian will insert these small needles into specific spots on your pet’s body, taking care to use needles of the appropriate length, so as not to puncture the lungs or other organs or small animals like cats. A mammal’s body is very similar to our own bodies, and so many of the acupuncture points are similar to where they are found on our bodies. By stimulating these pressure points with needles, traditionally it is believed that the energy flow in the body (whether they body be human or animal) is renewed and cleansed.

Although the practice of veterinarian acupuncture has been used in China for thousands of years, it was only recognized in the western world within the last century, and there are still many animal rights activists and human doctors who strongly question this method of treatment. Also, it is of course not a good option for all animals. If your house cat, for example, is skittish, he or she will probably not respond well to needles, and the risks involved with sedating an animal are too high to be appropriate for curing only slight problems with acupuncture.

Overall, it is simply important to check out all the treatment options when your pet is in pain. You owe it to your furry friend to seek out the best medical treatment available. Acupuncture can work in animals, so research this option if you think it may work for your pet.
