David asks…

I am having VERY painful headaches in back of head when doing strenuous activity?

I am having very very painful headaches in the back of my head whenever I do something strenuous, like after riding a roller coaster or sometimes exercising or during sexual activity. it never hurts during normal activity and it is only in the back of my head. Whats wrong with me?

Oh, I do spend time on the computer, but I have always used the computer a lot, but have never had these pains until recently.

health answers:

Tension is the most likely reason. On a roller coaster, it is because of whiplash, but your other activities are because your tensing up. Look in to some relaxation techniques.

Severe headaches, back of head… never go away?

I have had severe headaches in the back of my head since March 2nd. They are not considered migraines by doctors. I have seen an immunologist, 2 neurologists, an allergist, a rheumatologist a chiropractor, plenty of ER doctors, an optometrist, and opthalmologist, a neurosurgeon and countless other doctors. Pain medications like Vicodin and codeine do not affect it. I have had a CT scan and 2 MRIs, all of which were normal (I have considered Chiari malformation, but my MRI/radiation tech doesn’t see it in my film. I have had many blood tests, all returning normal(negative). I wore a neck brace and took muscle relaxants for a week on the demand on my neurosurgeon. I have also had an angiogram to rule out artery damage. My mom wants be to try Botox injections, but they aren’t proven so I’m not sure. Any suggestions for help?

health answers:

I can relate! The only other thing I can think of is to try more forms of relaxation, in case the headaches are due to stress. Even if they aren’t, techniques like self-hypnosis (which you can learn from a pain psychologist) often help with chronic pain when medication can’t.

It may sound kind of pointless, but I did a lot of self-hypnosis to try treating my chronic headache (different from your in that it varies in location and intensity, but I have had it constantly for the past 2 years), and while it didn’t allow me to get rid of it completely, I was able to move it, at will, to different areas of my head.

Self-hypnosis can really work, though – the psychologist who taught me it no longer needs Novocaine at the dentist because she can make herself not receive pain from her teeth during dental procedures out of pure focus.

Other than that, biofeedback and acupuncture are also said to be helpful. Good luck! That must have been a really difficult series of tests and such, and I hope you find a cure.

Lower back of head headaches?

I have been getting these headaches in the back of my head and the lower part of head and neck is killing me and back pains and headache in the front of my head above the eyebrows and temples. Is this all related to the sinus headache or something else?

health answers:

That sounds like a tension headache. Try to sit or stand up straight and roll your shoulders back a few times, that should help with the stiff neck. I think Excedrin makes a pain medication for tension headaches.

As with any symptom, if a headache lasts too long or occurs too often, check with your doctor.

Steven asks…

Neck stiffness with headaches in back of head?

I have had this neck stiffness its on both sides since November of 08 and I have constant headaches in the back of my head mainly by the left side of my ear the left side of my neck is stiffer and sticks out more then the right side of my neck… I have asked a doctor before and he said that I had just pulled something… I don’t think I did or it or it should have been gone by now… Does anyone know what this might be?

health answers:

Go back to the doctor (or got to another doctor) and get reevaluated. Obviously, you didn’t just pull something. It might be that your arteries in your neck are clogged, which is dangerous. It might be that you’re just overstressed and a couple massages or spine realignment (chiropractor) might do the trick. It might be there’s some other problem with the vertebrae.

You’ve had this thing for many months, so go back and tell him to look more closely, do some other tests, etc.
