A calorie is just a calorie whether it comes from protein, fat or carbohydrate.

If you consume more calories than you use up – then you will put on weight. It’s as simple as that – remember – the number of calories in must equal the number of calories out.

If you use a little planning to sort out what you are going to eat – it will be easier to ensure that you choose a wide variety of foods from all the food groups and thus follow a healthier eating plan.

These days most of us lead frenetic, hectic, busy lives – we are juggling a variety of roles and trying to somehow fit this all into a 24 hour day.
Its no wonder that healthy eating goes straight out of the window when we are rushing to get to work, to get the kids to school, to catch up with our work, going
to meetings, getting the domestic chores done etc. It is at times like this that we are more likely to miss meals altogether and impulse buy junk food.

By snacking on healthy foods, you can to an extent, overcome the damage you are doing to your body by not eating properly at all.
Similarly eating small meals through the day can help you provide some nourishment
for your body.

Eating food in its raw state, as unprocessed as possible ensures that you are getting the full extent of the vitamins and minerals as none will be destroyed by cooking (as in vegetables and fruit). Cooking modifies the food molecules and destroys the nutrients and enzymes therein. When you eat food which is raw you find you need to chew more, to break the food down, but also by doing this it sends signals to the digestive tract so that the right amount of digestive enzymes are produced.

Another healthy eating tip is that where possible try to grill or bake your food in preference to frying it. Even if you do need to fry or saut?, then use half the amount of fat you were supposed to.

Remember brown bread and rice is nutritionally better than its white counterparts. Wholemeal bread is an excellent source of convenience food – try to get your kids used to brown bread in their earlier years, and try to avoid white bread altogether. You’ll be glad you did.

When it comes to drinks and hot beverages, you are literally spoilt for choice when it comes to the wonderful world of herbal teas. They may not be to everyone’s taste – but don’t knock them until you’ve tried them. And they exceedingly good for you. For coffee lovers amongst you there are coffee substitutes that you can sample – dandelion coffee is one.

As well as cutting down on tea and coffee, you need to look at cutting down on your salt and sugar intake as well. Nowadays there are many types of vegetable stock cubes and vegetable bouillion powders available in health food shops. Using herbs, both fresh and dried can help to increase the flavour of a dish without the need to add much salt.
