Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction, or impotence, has been defined as men having difficulty getting or maintaining an erection. Erectile dysfunction is usually considered a condition which affects older men, and is typically associated with sexual dissatisfaction, decreased quality of life, depression and anxiety. Erectile dysfunction can also pose a problem for younger men. This condition has rarely been studied in teenaged males. Recent studies have shown that more and more men are using Viagra along with alcohol or illegal recreational drugs. Because of the use of Viagra, or other erectile dysfunction medications, increases the likelihood of spreading sexually transmitted diseases.

Viagra was the first effective oral therapy available to men with erectile dysfunction. Prior to the release of Viagra, the typical therapies available were injections and vacuum erection devices. The nerves or blood vessels in men who suffer from erectile dysfunction do not work properly. Viagra works by increasing the blood flow to the penis. It may combat impotence resulting from a wide variety of causes, including psychological problems, aging, and diabetes, side effects from other drugs, depression, and kidney failure.

There is evidence that shows Viagra has been used by many men to enhance sexual performance who do not have erectile dysfunction. Many reports have shown that Viagra has been used as a sex enhancer, often combined with illegal drugs. The benefits of Viagra are believed to lead to longer and stronger erections. There are men who seek Viagra because of performance anxiety and rather than contact their physician they are able to order the medication online. Viagra is supposed to be available only by prescription, but it is becoming increasingly available over the internet. The pressure for men to be able to perform is enough for some men to take whatever means are necessary

Like erectile dysfunction prescription medication, herbs and supplements can affect the body’s chemistry which may introduce the potential to produce side effects that may be harmful. There have been many reported cases of serious and lethal side effects from herbal products. Patients should always discuss herbal remedies with their doctors before using supplements for erectile dysfunction. Different herbal remedies for erectile dysfunction include Yohimbe, which is derived from the bark of a West African tree. Large doses of yohimbe may cause increased heart rate and blood pressure and could potentially cause kidney failure. Gamma-Butyrolactone is found is products which claim to enhance sexual function. This substance has the potential to convert to a chemical which can cause toxic and life threatening effects, which include seizures and coma.

There are also several surgical treatments available for erectile dysfunction. Penile implants involve surgical insertion of inflatable rods or tubes into the penis. A semi-rigid prosthesis is a silicon-covered flexible metal rod. Once the metal rod is inserted, it provides the rigidity necessary for intercourse and can be curved slightly for concealment. This is the simplest surgical procedure of all the prostheses. The main disadvantage is that concealment can be difficult with certain types of clothing. Vascular surgery for erectile dysfunction is rarely performed and is generally considered to be experimental. Regardless of what type a treatment a man chooses, it is important to consult a physician about erectile dysfunction to determine the cause and to receive the appropriate treatment.
