Sunglasses are a protective eyewear worn to prevent damage to eyes from sun and high-energy visible light. Sometimes they can improve eyesight when made with darkened, colored, or polarized lenses. Other times they are worn to hide identity or as a fashion statement.

Often the sunlight is too bright to be comfortable when people are outside participating in various activities. Further, it is highly recommended by individuals in the health care profession to wear eye protection in the sun as a safety measure. This is because eyes could otherwise become damaged from ultraviolet radiation or blue light.

However their use is not always for eye protection. Sunglasses are often connected with celebrities who use them to hide their identity. They are also popular as fashion accessories, especially in beach settings.

Sunglasses improve the vision in two key ways: by enhancing comfort and protecting against glare. Polarized lenses reduce glare given off by shiny surfaces, like water. Therefore they are popular among individuals who fish, who can see into the water instead of being blinded by reflections off its surface.

If glasses are not worn in situations with high UV levels, several ocular issues can result. These include apterygial, photokeratitis, snow blindness, cataracts, and eye cancer. However, to be effective the glasses should reduce UVA and UVB light rays of 400 nm by at least ninety nine or one hundred percent. The label that is given to prove this requirement is met is UV400.

However, even if wearing sunglasses, it is important never to look into the sun. The power of protection they offer will not be sufficient in this case. This is true even if there is a solar eclipse.

High-energy visible light is another type that needs to be protected against. This is because it has been linked to macular degeneration in older individuals. It has been suggested that amber lenses that can block blue light may have important safety applications for this reason. It is recommended that such products be made to reduce ninety five percent of the blue rays. Their use could be especially important for children, whose eye lenses may transmit more of this harmful light than adults. This is because adults eye lenses yellow as they age.

Sunglasses can also be worn in indoor settings or at nighttime, not for protection, but to make a statement. They can function as a type of concealment, such as to avoid eye contact or to hide emotions. They may also be worn as a fashion accessory, particularly those from designers. They can even be used to hide abnormalities in individuals who are blind.

Sunglass use is recommended by health professions to shield eyes from harm due to dangerous light rays. This includes UV type rays as well as blue light rays, both which can lead to some serious ocular health issues. However, some products are more efficient at shielding than others. There are other uses for these glasses as well, such as to avoid eye contact, hide emotion, make a fashion statement, or conceal eye abnormalities.
