The Art of Face Reading
Before you begin a session with an acupuncturist, he or she will usually ask you a long series of questions. These questions are often about your medical history, but your acupuncturist is doing more than recording and analyzing your answers to these questions-he or she is also analyzing your face. According to Chinese tradition, face reading is one of the most important parts of the treatment. Your acupuncturist does not only read your facial expressions (after all, anyone can have a poker face), but rather he or she also reads specific lines, swells, shadows, and shapes of your face to learn how to best treat you. Face reading is a difficult practice, and those skilled in the art have studied it for many years, often from masters. However, you will probably receive the best treatment when you visit an acupuncturist who is skilled in the art of face reading.
Each part of the face is said to reveal different facts about you and your health. There are twelve facial features that acupuncturists typically read: ears, jaw, chin, lips, mouth, hairline, forehead, brow, eyebrows, cheeks, nose, and eyes. They also look at the overall shape of your face and the two sides of your face in comparison to one another. We all do face reading a certain level-for example, you can see that a person with dark circles under his or her eyes is ill or tired. An acupuncturist looks for minute clues, like dark circles, but on a much more skillful level. For example, he or she will look at your cheeks and cheekbones for a clue on the health of your lungs and overall breathing ability. One spot that is commonly known is at the center of your forehead (commonly known in some traditions as the “third eye”), which is connected to the heart. Someone who is skilled at this art can also learn about the health of your liver, stomach, kidneys, gall bladder, and spleen.
Acupuncturists also can tell certain things about your personality by looking at your face. This may help him or her gage how you will react to certain techniques. More importantly, your face can be read, according to tradition, as a map of your past, present, and future. A skilled face reader can treat what is troubling you presently, as well as deal with past conditions and take preventative measures for the future.
Overall, face reading is a difficult skill, and your acupuncturist may or may not know how to do it. However, the two techniques go hand and hand, so you will probably be working with a more highly skilled professional if he or she demonstrates abilities in face reading.
