Different Ways to Receive Insulin

Insulin
People with Diabetes are either unable to make insulin or they can not make enough of it. That is why insulin is needed to keep them healthy.

Many Diabetics have to use insulin to keep their blood glucose levels normal. Losing weight can put you in a position where you may be able to stop taking insulin or diabetic pills.

All Type 1 Diabetics need insulin, but only some Type 2 Diabetics do.

There are a couple of different ways to get insulin into the body. One of the most common ways to get insulin is to inject it. You could inject insulin with a needle and syringe or you could use an insulin jet injector. The needle and syringe have a hollow tube and a plunger and is inserted into a fatty part of the body.

An insulin jet injector sprays insulin through the skin with high pressure air. This eliminates the need for a needle.

There are also insulin pumps that deliver insulin on a steady basis. These pumps are becoming more popular although some find them restrictive because they have to be worn just about all of the time. They can also be damaged when participating in sports or other physical activity.

Insulin infusers are also an option and they send insulin into the body with a tube instead of a needle. The tube is inserted just below the skin and is left there for days. This can be a good alternative for people that do not like needles.

Some people are also prescribed medications when they need to bring their blood glucose up. Even if you such medications you may still need insulin.

Be careful to inject the right amount of insulin you need. Having too much or too little can be dangerous.

If you inject insulin, typically shots are given into the thighs, buttocks or abdomen. It should be injected into the fat layer below the skin, so these “meatier” parts of your body are ideal. You do not want to inject in the same site too many time because it will cause a lump to appear.

Another factor to consider when you are injecting insulin is the fact that it will be absorbed at different rates through certain parts of the body. The abdomen absorbs insulin the fastest and injections in the buttocks produce the slowest absorption. Once you have injected into a particular site, using that part of the body will help move the insulin through the body quicker.

There are a couple of different ways to inject insulin. Pinch the subcutaneous fat and skin of the injection site and inject the needle at a 90 degree angle. This will help you avoid injecting the needle into the muscle. The 45 degree technique of injecting insulin also is designed to help you miss the muscle when injecting. Discuss these methods with your doctor or health care provider.

When dealing with needles it is important to be very careful. If daily injections are too much for you to handle, the insulin pump may be a better option for you. There are pros and cons for all injection techniques. The key is to find the one that works best for you
