What is it Like to Have a Vasectomy?

Here are the basic expectations for the male birth control method known as a vasectomy.

Preparations should include having the male wash himself thoroughly in the affected area. He will need to put on clean, snug fitting underwear and to bring an athletic supporter (jock strap) with him to the procedure. You may be asked to shave the front portion of the scrotum. You will be asked not to take any aspirin or other anti-inflammatory medication such as Advil, Motrin or Nuprin for at least 10 days prior to the procedure. Should the male disregard the instructions and take these medications then he will run the risk of bleeding.

Your doctor will answer any last minute questions you may have and then ask you to sign a consent form that states that you understand the risks involved and that sterility cannot be guaranteed.

During the procedure, which lasts approximately 20 to 30 minutes, you will be asked to change into a gown and to lie on an examination table. The place where the incision will be made will be washed with a sterile iodine solution. Shaving may or may not be done before hand. You will then be draped with a sterile drape.

A local anesthetic will be administered and a small opening will then be made on either side of the scrotum. Each vas deferens will be lifted out and then cut, and possibly a section removed. The male may feel some pressure or a pulling sensation during the procedure. The two cut ends are then usually cauterized (heat sealed), tied, or clipped before returning to the previous position.

Putting in stitches may close the surgical opening.

You should have been told to have someone to be able to drive you home from the procedure. The anesthesia may take an hour or two to wear off and then you may need to use an over-the-counter pain reliever for mild discomfort or pain. Recovery is generally less for a no-scalpel vasectomy then it is for a traditional vasectomy.

You will be instructed to stay off your feet for the first few days and to wear snug cotton briefs or an athletic supporter (jock strap) to help apply pressure against the area of the procedure and for support of the scrotum. You may use an ice pack or package of frozen peas or other small frozen vegetable to the scrotum for the first 24 hours after the vasectomy. You should never place ice or a cold pack directly on the skin. Use a cover for the pack or a towel placed between the cold surface and your skin.

You should be instructed to avoid any heavy lifting for at least one week after the procedure. Unless the job involves heavy physical exertion, returning to work after 3 days of recuperation is generally possible. Couples are usually advised to wait at least one week before resuming sexual activity.

The male will have periodic sperm counts until his count is negative which means he is now sterile and unable to impregnate a woman.
