The “mermaid lifestyle” is a trend that celebrates the spirit of mermaids and incorporates their mythical qualities into everyday life. It’s a mix of fashion, art, fitness, environmental awareness, and fantasy—a lifestyle embraced by people who feel a connection to the sea and who are drawn to the mystery, beauty, and freedom that mermaids symbolize.
Mermaid Fashion and Aesthetics
Colors and Textures : People adopting the mermaid lifestyle often wear colors inspired by the ocean, such as seafoam green, turquoise, coral, and shades of blue and purple. Sequins, metallics, and iridescent materials mimic the scales and shimmer of a mermaid tail.
Accessories : Shell jewelry, pearls, and beach-themed accessories are popular. Hairstyles often include waves, braids, or even “mermaid hair,” where colors like pastel blues, pinks, or greens create an ocean-inspired look.
Tail Costumes : Some go a step further by wearing custom-made mermaid tails for swimming, beach gatherings, or photo shoots. These tails range from simple fabric versions to elaborate silicone designs that resemble fish scales.
Mermaid Fitness and Swimming
Mermaid Swimming : This unique form of swimming involves wearing a mermaid tail and performing undulating, dolphin-like movements. It’s a full-body workout that builds core strength, flexibility, and endurance. “Mermaiding” classes and certifications are offered at various aquatic centers.
Free Diving : Many mermaid enthusiasts also practice free diving, where one learns to hold their breath and swim underwater without equipment. It’s an ideal complement to the mermaid lifestyle, as it allows people to experience the underwater world up close.
Yoga and Flexibility Training : Since the mermaid lifestyle often requires strong flexibility and balance, many incorporate yoga or dance into their routines to improve flexibility, especially for graceful tail movements.
Ocean Conservation and Sustainability
Environmental Advocacy : The mermaid lifestyle has a strong focus on ocean conservation and marine life protection. Many mermaid enthusiasts participate in beach clean-ups, support sustainable products, and raise awareness about issues like plastic pollution, coral bleaching, and overfishing.
Eco-Friendly Choices : Sustainable fashion, avoiding single-use plastics, and supporting ocean-friendly businesses are common practices within the mermaid lifestyle. By aligning with conservation causes, mermaid enthusiasts feel they’re contributing to the health of the world’s oceans.
Fantasy and Creativity
Photography and Art : The mermaid lifestyle is a creative outlet for photographers, artists, and costume designers. People create mermaid-inspired art, write stories, and participate in photo shoots that capture the magic of underwater environments.
Events and Gatherings : Mermaid conventions and gatherings, like MerMagic Con or the California Mermaid Convention, bring enthusiasts together for tail-swimming, costume competitions, workshops, and more.
Social Media and Content Creation : Many mermaids share their journeys on social media, building online communities of people who celebrate mermaid culture. Content includes underwater videos, eco-friendly lifestyle tips, and fashion or fitness advice.
Personal Connection to the Ocean and Self-Expression
Spirituality and Mindfulness : For some, the mermaid lifestyle has a spiritual dimension. It may involve a sense of connection with water as an element or practice in mindfulness through ocean-based activities. This connection can be healing, as water is often associated with emotional cleansing and self-renewal.
Body Positivity and Inclusivity : The mermaid lifestyle encourages self-expression and body positivity, with many people finding joy and confidence through the art of “mermaiding.” It’s a diverse community that celebrates individuality and creativity, welcoming all shapes, sizes, and backgrounds.
The mermaid lifestyle is about embodying the fantasy and ideals that mermaids represent—freedom, mystery, connection to nature, and a deep appreciation for the ocean and all its wonders.

The Mermaid’s Gift
She was a dark spot against the setting sun
a fish breaching or a pelican taking flight,
perhaps, was my guess, squinting against
the last of the day’s light
and went back to strumming my guitar
in rhythm with the waves,
a lonely beachcomber, a sad musician,
a widow with a broken heart.
Music came from the sea,
as if a human voice was a violin
singing harmonies heard sometimes
in my most precious dreams,
my fingers sought chords to stroke
on the strings of my guitar, then faltered,
I placed the solace of my days within her case
and strode into the gentle waves,
with a few steps began to swim.
The water was golden red, where she treaded,
her voice stilled, her face was the face
of my lost wife, almost, ears sharpened,
her long hair was emerald green like seaweed
her oval eyes contained large dark pools
encircled with cerulean blue,
her breasts were small roundish mounds of flesh
slightly ridged at the edges
as if meant, as well, to be fins when not nursing –
she spoke words in a language I did not know.
A creature of the sea, yet here was all that I now missed,
the essence of a human woman to be loved
and to love me – and I began to understand,
not her words, but her presence:
she had felt my loneliness and the vibrations
of my music and drawn to the edge of her world
had come bearing a gift,
that mermaids have always held,
with a quick flick of her effervescent scaley tail
she moved to me, contacting, and she kissed me,
then dived vanishing, just as the sun left
and in twilight, I returned to the shore.
I did not feel the chill of my wet clothes,
climbing up the curvy path, guitar case in hand,
towards the parking lot and my car,
the darkness becoming night was the same, as always,
and though still myself,
I had changed –
was she a miracle or a reminder
that the world is beyond my understanding?
Both I suppose, knowing I was ready now
to live again.
