Pets enrich our lives. Cats and dogs and other creatures give us purpose, provide relationship and entertainment. Our pets can work for us by catching mice and providing security. And they are something to love and be loved by.
To put it simply, having a pet is a source of joy. But pet stains and odors are inevitable challenges. While commercial cleaning products are available, many prefer natural, home remedies to deal with pet-related messes. Here are effective home remedies for handling both stains and odors caused by pets.
Vinegar and Baking Soda Combo
One of the most popular and effective combinations is vinegar and baking soda. Both are natural deodorizers and cleaners. This method works on carpets, upholstery, and hard surfaces.
Ingredients:
- White vinegar
- Baking soda
- Water
Method:
- Blot the stain first to remove as much liquid as possible.
- Mix equal parts of water and white vinegar. Pour the solution onto the stain. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes.
- Blot again to remove excess moisture.
- Sprinkle baking soda liberally over the affected area and leave it for several hours or overnight.
- Vacuum thoroughly to remove the dried baking soda, which should have absorbed the odor and stain.
Hydrogen Peroxide and Dish Soap
For tougher stains, especially urine, hydrogen peroxide combined with dish soap can be highly effective. Hydrogen peroxide not only helps lift the stain but also disinfects the area.
Ingredients:
- 3% hydrogen peroxide
- Dish soap
- Baking soda
Method:
- Blot the stain first.
- Mix a teaspoon of dish soap with about half a cup of hydrogen peroxide.
- Apply the mixture to the stained area, then sprinkle baking soda over it.
- Scrub gently with a brush and leave it to sit for 10-15 minutes.
- Blot or vacuum up the excess.
Enzyme-based Cleaner: DIY Version
If you prefer a more natural approach to enzyme cleaners, you can make your own. This method mimics commercial enzyme cleaners and is ideal for recurring issues with pet stains.
Ingredients:
- Citrus peels (like orange or lemon)
- Brown sugar
- Water
Method:
- Fill a large bottle with water, adding citrus peels and about 2 tablespoons of brown sugar.
- Allow the mixture to ferment for 2-3 months.
- Once ready, use this natural cleaner to spray over pet stains. Enzymes will help break down organic compounds that cause odors.
Club Soda
Club soda is simple yet effective for fresh pet stains, particularly on carpets. Club soda works because its carbonation helps lift stains, and its neutral pH doesn’t harm fabrics or carpets.
Ingredients:
- Club soda
Method:
- Blot the fresh stain with a towel.
- Pour club soda over the stain, letting it fizz and break down the mess.
- Blot it again to soak up the liquid.
Cornstarch for Greasy Stains
For greasy or oily stains, cornstarch is an excellent natural absorbent. This works well on both carpets and upholstery and can be used in combination with other remedies to fully clean the spot.
Ingredients:
- Cornstarch
Method:
- Sprinkle cornstarch over the greasy stain.
- Leave it on for at least 15-30 minutes.
- Vacuum up the powder once it has absorbed the oil.
Lemon Juice
Lemon juice is a natural deodorizer and stain fighter, particularly for pet stains on hard surfaces. Lemon juice naturally breaks down stain molecules and leaves a fresh scent behind. However, avoid using lemon juice on dark fabrics, as it could cause discoloration.
Ingredients:
- Fresh lemon juice
- Water
Method:
- Mix equal parts lemon juice and water.
- Apply the solution to the stain and let it sit for a few minutes.
- Wipe it clean with a damp cloth.
Activated Charcoal
Activated charcoal is excellent for neutralizing strong pet odors. Activated charcoal absorbs unpleasant smells, making it particularly useful for areas with lingering odors like pet beds or enclosed spaces.
Ingredients:
- Activated charcoal
Method:
- Place activated charcoal in small containers or sachets around the area where the odor persists.
Essential Oil Freshener
After cleaning, you may want to add a pleasant scent to the room. This freshener can help mask any lingering pet odors, but avoid spraying directly on pets or fabrics they might chew.
Ingredients:
- Essential oils (such as lavender or eucalyptus)
- Water
- Spray bottle
Method:
- Mix a few drops of essential oil in water and pour into a spray bottle.
- Lightly mist the cleaned area to refresh the space.
Tips for Success:
Act quickly: Fresh stains are easier to remove than dried ones. Blot rather than rub stains to avoid spreading.
Test first: Before using any homemade remedy, test it in an inconspicuous area to ensure it won’t damage the material.
Routine maintenance: Vacuum regularly and launder pet bedding frequently to prevent buildup of pet hair, dirt, and odors.
With these simple, natural solutions, you can tackle both pet stains and odors while keeping your home fresh, without resorting to harsh chemicals.
