How to Lower Your Risk for Prostate Cancer

Men cannot prevent prostate cancer, but they can make smarter choices in order to lessen the chance that they may get prostate cancer. Researchers do not understand what causes prostate cancer but they do know some things about it, enough so that there can be some prevention strategies that may lessen the risk factors for men willing to make lifestyle and diet changes.

Prevention trials and research studies are constantly being conducted to learn more about how men may be able to prevent prostate cancer. In the meantime men can take better control of their health by understanding what is known about the prostate and how to keep it healthy.

Prostate cancer is usually viewed as a cancer that older men get. It is also more common for African-American men to get prostate cancer. All men with family history of prostate cancer should take prevention seriously. There are other risk factors that men should know about if they intend to lower their risk for prostate cancer.

Risk factors for prostate cancer include age, family history, being African-American, being obese, and having a diet high in saturated fats and high in cholesterol. Some of these factors men cannot control such as the process of aging, or their ethnicity but they can control what they eat and how much they weigh.

Follow this list of things that may help to lower your risk for prostate cancer:

There are no definite research backed diet guidelines yet for preventing prostate cancer, but these guidelines will come pretty close….

? Do not overeat and try to keep to portion sizes

? Avoid high-fat foods

? Choose whole-grain, brown rice instead of white rice, and whole-wheat bread

? Limit sweets and salt

? If you must drink alcohol do so in moderation

? Eat all the colors of fruits and vegetables

? Eat foods that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids such as cold-water fish (herring, mackerel and salmon)

? Eat soy products

? Eat legumes

? Drink green tea

Researchers have found that obesity may play a role in increasing the risk for prostate cancer because obesity affects the levels of hormones that are related to prostate cancer risk. Men should be careful to avoid obesity by following guidelines for a healthy diet, and also by having a plan for regular exercising 5 days out of the week and actively following the plan for at least 30 minutes of active exercising a session. Always consult with a doctor before starting any exercise plan especially if you have previously led a sedentary lifestyle.

Experts are also studying the affects some medications have on the risk for prostate cancer such as drugs that affect testosterone levels. Currently there are no studies that support the use of drugs to prevent prostate cancer but the studies are being conducted. Any drugs have the potential for side effects so the benefits should be weighted against these side effects.
