Erectile Dysfunction; Overview

Erectile Dysfunction, or ED as it’s commonly called, is no longer a taboo subject. Commonly reported on in news reports, magazines, and newspapers, erectile dysfunction is the inability of a man to achieve or maintain an erection that is sufficient for his sexual needs or for the needs of his partner. Most men will experience this at some point in their lives, typically by age 40, and are not psychologically affected by it. However, some men will experience chronic and complete erectile dysfunction, which is typically termed impotence. The cause of frequent erectile dysfunction can cause emotional problems or relationship problem and often leads to diminished self esteem. The good news is that while erectile dysfunction has many causes, the causes are treatable and is not an inevitable consequence of aging.

Erectile dysfunction does not have to be a burden as men get older and there are many popular cures and medications available to help ensure that it does not negatively affect men. There are several medical conditions that can cause erectile dysfunction, including diabetes (caused by high blood sugar), hypertension (caused by high blood pressure), and hardening of the arteries, which is called atherosclerosis. Hormone imbalance can also cause erectile dysfunction and your doctor may need to alter any current medication by either changing dosages or trying an alternative. There are other issues which may cause erectile dysfunction including problems within your relationship with your sexual partner. Therapy is beneficial in this case and is most effective if the sexual partner is included in the session.

Erectile dysfunction is diagnosed beginning with a physical exam done by your physician. Samples of blood and urine may be taken to test for disease or disorders. Your physician will determine which tests are right for you. Treatment of erectile dysfunction is treated in any number of ways, but the treatment is determined by what is causing it in the first place. There are several different types of medications that may be prescribed to help with erectile dysfunction and while not everyone is a good candidate for these types of medications, your doctor will help you decide if they are beneficial. If medication is not the right option for you, you may consider trying vacuum pump devices or discuss surgery options with an urologist.

There are many factors which can lead to erectile dysfunction, including, but not limited to, alcohol and tobacco use, fatigue, brain or spinal cord injuries, liver or kidney failure, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, and certain types of prostate or bladder surgery. Many feeling may also lead to erectile dysfunction, including feeling nervous about sex, feeling stressed from family or work situations, troubles from problems in your relationship with your sexual partner, depression, or the feeling that your partner may be reacting negatively to you. While there are several factors which may cause erectile dysfunction, there are many options available today that were not available or even discussed several years ago. Contacting your physician for more information is the best option to begin treatment.
