Avoiding Erectile Dysfunction and Dealing With It.

Obviously men would rather prevent erectile dysfunction (ED) than to have to learn how to deal with it. The unfortunate part is that so many men are unaware of the risk factors for ED, and therefore do not know how to prevent it. Once they have ED, it then is much more beneficial for the man and his partner if he learns how to deal with ED.

An occasional episode of ED is actually normal as life throws a lot of curves our way. You can prevent these occurrences from becoming chronic though by following these simple tips:

Do your best to limit or avoid altogether the use of alcohol and other drugs that are unnecessary (over the counter) or street drugs.

If you smoke, stop.

Make sure you exercise on a regular basis.

Take steps to reduce the stress in your life at home and at work.

It is important to get enough sleep.

Make plans for dealing with any anxiety or depression you may be feeling.

Make regular appointments to see your doctor to help determine your progress and to discuss any needed changes in your treatment plan.

Dealing with Erectile Dysfunction:

Don’t let the occasional ED episode get “into your head”. Try not to assume that one episode means that you have some kind of permanent damage. Try not to view one episode of ED as a comment regarding your health, your virility or your masculinity.

Remember that just as the sexual act is between two adults, erectile dysfunction whether it is temporary or chronic, reflects on both of you. The emotional toll ED takes will be extracted on you and your partner. Dealing with ED means paying attention to each other and coming to terms with the emotional impact of ED with both your needs in mind.

Communication between the two of you will be important. A psychological counselor can help you with communication skills. Treatment can be more effective if the couple can work together during the entire treatment process.

Knowledge is power and learning about erectile dysfunction and how to deal with it can actually speed the healing process. If you are fortunate enough to not have erectile dysfunction, do all you can to prevent it, by following the tips discussed above. Communication is important during the entire process from discovery of symptoms, making the decision to see the doctor, in your dealings with the doctor and the medical staff to how you relate to your spouse/partner. Positive informative communication can be an aid to the treatment of erectile dysfunction just as negative or non-communicative behavior can tear down the healing process.
