Rosacea Treatment Explored

It is essential to start treatment for rosacea as soon as you discover that you have the facial skin disease. Rosacea is a progressive skin disease, which means that it will worsen over time if left untreated.

In general mild rosacea is treated with topical therapy (metronidazole, azelaic acid, sulfacetamide) and camouflage makeup and gentle non-irritating skincare products. Any broken blood vessels may be treated with laser treatments. Flushing symptoms can be controlled by using antiflushing medications and by avoiding the factors that embarrass or aggravate you. Avoid using cortisone cream, as this will increase the flushing effect.

Moderate rosacea that includes increased redness, inflamed papules and pustules (infected papules) can usually be treated with a combination of topical therapy and oral therapy. The topical treatment can be metronidazole, azelaic acid, sulfacetamide and the oral therapy will consist of antibiotics and isotretinion. Camouflage makeup can be used and gentle skincare without irritants.

Severe rosacea usually involves complications of the eyes or nose. The eyes
are treated with oral therapy, antibiotics and the nose is treated with laser treatments to destroy the thickened growth of cells.

Oral antibiotics typically prescribed for rosacea are: doxycycline, erythromycin, minocycline and tetracycline. Erythromycin is an antibiotic that also has an antibacterial effect. Minocycline is a tetracycline antibiotic that also has both an antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effect. Doxycycline is another tetracycline antibiotic used for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Tetracycline was developed in 1953 and is a broad spectrum antibiotic.

Treating cosmetically the physical signs of rosacea can be important as the red face, and red nose can appear to be signs of alcoholism, which can be misinterpreted in business situations and costly for the rosacea patient. One technology has been used to treat hair removal and to remove dark spots and tattoos on the skin and can now be used in conjunction with laser treatment to improve the complexion of those suffering from rosacea. This technology is “Intense Pulsed Light (IPL).

Intense pulsed light produces a carefully defined spectrum of light, so as to reduce or eliminate the redness of the skin. The laser treatment follows immediately after the IPL treatment when the goal is to eliminate large unsightly blood vessels from the nose, chin area or cheeks. Patients who have had this treatment report that they also blush less easily too.

Often times we are judged in business by our appearance and those with rosacea can be harshly and unfairly judged in error due to the facial symptoms of the disease. Treatment allows these individuals to face life with a cleaner, clearer complexion, which gives them a new confidence and attitude that usually carries over to other aspects of their health. Usually they care more about their dietary and exercise habits after seeing the positive results of caring for their skin.
