Eight Ways To Reduce Stress and Tension Headaches
March 1st, 2011 by Aldouspi

Stress headaches are just that, caused by stress. We all feel stressed at some time in our life. We may feel frustrated, tense, depressed, and stressed out. Sometimes we feel we cannot physically bear any more tension. It begins affecting our mood, emotions, and physical health. The result of stress and tension can be headaches.

We all have had stress or tension headaches because of circumstances beyond our control. So what can we do to relieve stress and tension and avoid that headache or serious migraine? Here are some ways to prevent stress headaches.

1. Don't take life too seriously. Develop the ability to laugh at yourself. A sense of humor can take you through many stressful situations. Smile. That seems such a small thing but smiles are contagious and will make you feel better and encourage those around you to smile too.
2. Be sure you get the proper amount of sleep. Your body and mind need a respite to regroup and rejuvenate. You need at least 7-8 hours each night to allow your body to get the rest it needs. Take a soothing bath before you go to bed, turn off the television one half hour before you retire, and do not eat any heavy food before trying to go to sleep.
3. Take up a hobby, or find a recreational sport you enjoy. If you can immerse yourself in a hobby, or favorite sport or activity you may be able to reduce the amount of tension and prevent future headaches.
4. Think positive. I know, sometimes that is the hardest to do especially when prospects do not look good for the outcome you hope for. Try replacing negative thoughts with positive ones. You will be surprised at the lift it will give you.
5. Be good to yourself. Take time to do things that lift your spirits and make you happy. Housework, dishes, and the laundry will wait and you will have less stress if you take the time to read, play with your children, or just take a walk.
6. Try not to be too emotional. I know that emotions tend to overwhelm us and sometimes we need to take the time to allow those emotions to come out. You can control your emotions or know when to express them. This will help ease tension.
7. Talk. Yes, talk to friends, family, to God. Do you think you have no one to talk to? Write a journal. Take a few minutes each day to write down your thoughts. Lay your heart out on that paper. Keep it locked or put in a safe place if you don't want others to read it, but the important part is to get the emotions out. Call a friend; close family member or your counselor or pastor. Many times stress can be relieved and put in perspective by talking about the circumstances.
8. Do yoga or meditation. Yoga and meditation are wonderful, proven ways to reduce stress. There are yoga techniques for beginners, but most of yoga is quieting your mind to ease stress and tension.

Prevent recurring headaches by taking control of the stress and tension in your life.
