Should You Compete in a Triathlon?

When you think of competing in a triathlon, do you feel excited or intimidated? You’ll benefit from triathlon training in many ways.

Triathlons require you to practice three distinctly different sports, which is good for you. This is much healthier than single-sport exercise, because you’ll use different muscle groups every day. If you get used to one sport only, your body will also adjust to the exercise, meaning you won’t have as effective of a workout, as you would if you employed muscle confusion (using different muscle groups).

By definition, you’ll need to run, swim, and bike in order to prepare for a triathlon, which will force you to use your muscles in three distinctly different ways.

You can let the triathlon motivate you to work hard and exercise regularly. You’ll be able to set goals that will prepare you for the race day. However, you get to choose between three types of exercise, meaning you don’t have to swim, if it’s freezing cold out and you can’t stand the thought of getting wet. For instance, you can run on the treadmill, if you don’t want to get wet. Or you can swim, if it’s a miserably hot day.

Triathlons are more achievable than some other single-sport races may be. Instead of building up to handle running a whole marathon, you’re building up to a lower level in three different sports. None of the three stretches will be too long to handle.

You’ll be able to compete in whatever length race is reasonable for you. You can start with a sprint triathlon, which will only require 250 meters of swimming, somewhere between 7-13 miles of biking, and anywhere from 2-3 miles of running. Give yourself at least three months to train. You can take on longer triathlons as you get in better shape, so the races can grow as you improve.

Triathlons will introduce you to a new community of fitness buffs. You’ll find great moral support within the tri community.
