Beat the Bad Breath Blues

bad breath

You know the look"the one where you reach over to talk to your friend or whisper in their ear and they turn their head away in disgust. It is nothing personal; it is your bad breath. Maybe you had a double cheeseburger with onions for lunch, or maybe you are suffering from a more serious problem. No one wants to have bad breath.

There are many ways that you can counteract bad breath and prevent it from happening in the future.

Everyone has bad breath, also known as halitosis, at some point. It happens to some people more than others. For some people, a quick brush and floss will do the trick. Other people may need to visit their dentist for a check up.

While it is certainly hard to tell if you have bad breath by yourself, you can check for the following to determine if you might have it. Do your friends offer you mints or gum? Do you have a bad taste in your mouth? Do you have a yellow or white tint on your tongue? Do people step away from you when you talk? If you answered yes, you are not alone. Here are some easy ways to beat the bad breath blues.

Brushing and flossing: It goes without saying that brushing your teeth (and your tongue) and regular flossing can combat bad breath. Keep a toothbrush handy and make sure that you brush after each meal and snack. When you brush, you are getting rid of tiny food particles and bacteria that collect in your mouth after you eat. If you do not get rid of these particles, then they stay trapped in your mouth, which can lead to tooth decay. You must also floss each day. Do not skip it. Your dentist is right. Regular flossing helps prevent bad breath.

Medical and dental check ups: There are many medical and dental problems that can lead to bad breath. If you suspect that is the cause, then it is time to make a visit to your health care provider or dentist. Diabetes, allergies, nasal congestion and drainage, sore throats, oral cancer, and oral lesions and infections can all cause you to have chronic bad breath. If you can't seem to get rid of your bad breath by regular brushing and flossing, then it is a possibility that there is a medical condition that you need treatment for.

Eat a healthy diet and drink water: When you eat a healthy diet and drink lots of water, you can help your breath stay fresh. In fact, many experts will tell you that if you can't brush right away after a meal, have a snack of sliced apples. In addition, plenty of water keeps you hydrated. A dry mouth will also cause you to have bad breath.

Stop smoking: When you smoke, or use any type of tobacco problems, you are contributing to bad breath. Smoking causes all kind of oral health issues and stains your teeth, as well. If you are a smoker or a tobacco user, kick the habit to gain a fresher and healthier mouth.
