Is Sugar the Baddie for Health?

Highly refined sugar is not good for us in huge quantities. Too much leads to excess energy and if that isn’t burned off it gets stored as fat. Too much isn’t good for our nutrition, our dental care and probably our skin. Refined sugar is the white sugar we use daily, Raw sugar is the sugar before it is refined and molasses is the substance extracted from sugar beets and sugar cane from which the sugar is made. Brown sugar is simply refined sugar sprayed with molasses.

As with all things moderation is the key and as a small part of an otherwise healthy diet a few sprinklings of sugar will be fine. The trouble starts when too much sugar is eaten, and because it is a simple carbohydrate it is processed very quickly by the body causing a spike of insulin into the system to deal with the sudden rise in blood sugar. So you can see the concerns for the development of Diabetes.

The fast foods and convenience foods we eat are highly processed and more often than not loaded with sugars. Certainly, when we think of putting 10-12 teaspoons of sugar into a regular glass of water it seems excessive, but that is the amount we get for every glass of soft drink we have. Change to naturally sweet fruits to get your sweet fix. Cut processed sweet foods from your diet. You can train yourself not to crave the sugar hit. Once it’s gone it won’t come back.
