Orthodontics are for Adults, Too!

If you are an adult suffering from crooked teeth, mismatched jaws and poor digestion due to the fact that your teeth don’t line up properly. Perhaps you were under the impression that since you are older there is no cure for these problems. Nothing could be further from the truth. New methods in adult orthodontics are helping adults achieve the smile and comfort they need to be confident and healthy. Don’t put off treatment because of your age.

Mouth problems do not limit themselves to only the mouth. When your teeth don’t fit together properly, a myriad of things can go wrong. Pain can occur as teeth hit together as you chew or talk. Your food may not be digesting properly because you cannot chew it right. Heartburn or upset stomach can result.

Aside from digestive problems and pain, crooked teeth are harder to clean. Cavities and uneven wear become common and in some cases you may lose your teeth prematurely. Gum problems can also sprout up. To say the least, crooked teeth can be unattractive, undermining your confidence as you go about your life.

Orthodontic treatment may take longer in an adult than in a child. Children’s mouths heal faster than adults do, so your dentist will have to move your teeth in a slower, less aggressive manner. But that should not stop you from getting the treatment of adult orthodontics you need. This is truly a case where the pros outweigh the cons.

We all remember the braces of the past but things have changed. Braces are now smaller and less noticeable. They come in shades of white that blend in with the whiteness of your teeth. So no more “metal mouth” as when you were in school. But if yo ant them to be noticed, braces also come in glittery fun styles that will make your smile get noticed even before your treatment is done. Gold, ruby, sapphire, these are all accents that can be put on your braces to make them more fun.

Although some orthodontists do specialize in treating adults, all who are board certified are trained in adult therapy. But shy away from those who seem to want to rush your treatment or promise immediate results. Adult orthodontics treatment takes time and rushing it can give you more problems than you had to begin with.

As an older person your braces will probably be getting tightened about every three to six weeks, no sooner. A child can have his or hers tightened in two to four weeks. But again, you do not want to rush this. If your dentist seems to be going too fast, ask him or her to slow down.

In the end, orthodontics can greatly benefit adults who suffer from imperfect teeth and the problems that they cause. Although the remedy is a slower one, adults can now be in possession of a beautiful smile even if they didn’t have one as a child. Look into the treatment that can give you better health and make you more confident.
