H1N1 Flu (Swine Flu)

First of all what does it mean to be the H1N1 flu?

This has to do with the chemical properties of the virus. The chemical responsible for binding the virus to host cells is called the HA (hemagglutinin) peplomer. And the compound that that allows thevirus to break its bonds to the host cell once it is ready to move on is called the NA (neuraminidase) peplomer. Combine the INitials H&N and you get a virus type known as the H1N1 Flu

The other well-known name for this flu is the Swine Flu. Normally swine flu refers to a type of virus infection that pigs get. Unfortunately, humans can pick up this virus from pigs – when that happens it is called Swine Flu.

These cases occur in persons with direct exposure to pigs (Example: Owner and or workers in a swine stockyard or industry or even when children go near pigs at a fair).

The virus is contagious and can spread from human to human.

Symptoms of swine flu in people are similar to the symptoms of most human flues such as cough, fever, body aches, sore throat, chills, fatigue and headache.

Swine Flu is a respiratory track infection and can be deadly. This infection is a worldwide virus outbreak that started in Mexico and has eventually spread from one country to another, crossing continents including China.

A deadly flu epidemic occurs when a new influenza virus emerges for which people have little or no immunity to it.

Seasonal flu occurs every year. People become infected by touching something with flu viruses on it and then they touch their mouth or nose. The viruses being spread from an infected person by coughing and sneezing.

By the way, if you think that swine flu can come from foods we eat – that is not true. The influenza viruses cannot be transmitted by food including pork or pork products. Of course, it is always important to properly handle and cook pork safely.

If you think you or a member of your family have contracted Swine Flu, check with your doctor for treatment.
