Trade One Kind of Needle for Another: Kicking a Drug Habit with Acupuncture

One of the most innovative uses for acupuncture is drug and alcohol treatment. In many substance abuse clinics across the nation, as well as around the world, acupuncture is being studied as a way to help patients kick the habit. When used correctly, advocates assert that acupuncture can help a drug user or alcoholic curb cravings, relax, reduce painful symptoms, and clear the mind. With beginnings in China in the 1970s, acupuncture is now offered for many people who are otherwise having a difficult time breaking the bad habits of substance abuse. If you or a loved one is currently trying to quit such a habit, consider acupuncture as a treatment therapy. Acupuncture alone probably cannot help a patient sufficiently, but when paired with other treatments, studies show that it works quite well.

Acupuncture is most helpful in patients who are violently suffering from withdrawal symptoms. When you deprive your body of a substance that it has been used to having, such as nicotine, you will experience strong cravings for this substance. In harder drugs, such as cocaine or heroin, these cravings can turn to physical needs for the substance. The body shows this need with cramps, vomiting, sweating, and other discomfort. Acupuncturists use the same techniques they use on other patients to relieve these symptoms. When done correctly, a patient may feel immediate relief, and other times the symptoms of withdrawal will melt away. This occurs more quickly than with patients who do not use acupuncture treatment for withdrawal symptoms.

The form of medical practice also helps patients relax. An acupuncture session is quiet and serene, giving substance abusers time to think and clear their minds. Commonly, five small needles are placed around the ears, and patients then rest with them inserted for about 45 minutes. This is a good time for reflection. After this treatment, the acupuncturist can also treat specific problems, such as trouble sleeping or achy joints.

Acupuncture is not a sole answer for substance abuse. However, it is a good start to getting your life back on track and an excellent addition to a drug or alcohol abuse rehabilitation program. Acupuncture can be used safely with other medications, takes little time every day, does not utilize chemical substances, and can be continued on an outpatient basis for the rest of your life, so it is a perfect treatment option for substance abusers. Consider acupuncture and its many benefits when you or someone you know is taking those first steps to a new and healthier life.
