Every individual being treated for high LDL cholesterol or low HDL cholesterol will here the word, “diet” many times in regards to treatment. Changes in diet are the first step in trying to get cholesterol levels to heart healthy levels. There are five basic dietary strategies that most doctors will recommend to their cholesterol patients including eating more vegetables, fruits, whole grains and legumes as the number one recommendation, to choose fat grams such as those found in butter, salad dressing, sweets and desserts, olive and peanut oils sparingly and with an eye on fat intake levels and thirdly to eat a variety of food including protein as your body needs to have a variety of nutrients to function properly including protein. The fourth is to limit your cholesterol, saturated fat, and simple carbohydrates intake. Lastly to feed your body instead of overeating or starving and then feasting. Many mini meals throughout the day can help control blood sugar and regulate metabolism. Regarding diet, doctors also advice their patients to try to reduce salt intake in order to control blood pressure, to improve active exercise to an appropriate level, to hydrate by drinking at least one to two liters of water each day unless the doctor has reason to restrict your fluid intake and also to enjoy what you eat so that you will have a positive outlook on life, eating is one of life’s simple pleasure’s or so the saying goes.

Regular active exercise can strengthen your heart and your cardiovascular system, can improve your circulatory system, increases your HDL and lowers your LDL, charges your energy level, and helps to increase your endurance, reduces body fat, reduces stress, can boost self-image, improve your sleep, make you more relaxed and looking fit and healthy looking. As you can see regular exercise does much more than lend a hand at controlling your cholesterol.
