A Rainbow of Possibilities

Acupuncturists use a variety of methods for diagnosis patients. Unlike Western medicine, which focuses specifically on treating specific symptoms, acupuncture works by treating the underlying root of the problem. One of the main ways in which acupuncturists plan a course of action for your health situation is by looking at the colors of your body. Of course, pigment varies from person to person due to many factors, including genetics, but acupuncturists are traditionally trained in the art of knowing when colors are abnormal for all races of people. By reading the colors of your skin and bodily fluids, and acupuncturist can learn how to best treat you.

The color red is most often related to the heart. Remember, in acupuncture, the heart does not solely refer to that specific organ, but rather refers to a flow of energy. This is true with all of the organs. You may notice that someone who has a heart condition is often red in the face. However, lots of laughter can also make your face red, and this is a heart-healthy situation. Acupuncturists learn the difference between good red and bad red.

Traditionally, the spleen and stomach represent the earth. Therefore, their color is the color of the earth-yellow. Yellow faces can take on two complexions, glowing or sickly. These indicate strong and weak spleens or stomachs, respectively. The same is true for the color white, which represents the lungs. You may notice that a person, right before he or she passes out, turns white in the face. Similarly, people who worry a lot (and so, sigh often) have paler complexions than people who do not. Again, white is not always a bad thing-generally, a face full of luster and healthy-looking, although it may be pale, is healthy. Acupuncturists are trained to see the differences between healthy colors and sickly colors. When reading coloring, black is associated with the kidneys and blue is associated with the liver in the same way that white and yellow correspond to their organs. It is also important to note that a face may have a number of color combinations, such as a yellowish complexion with a red flush in the cheeks. A professional will be able to discern what this means for the patient.

Of course, this is not a scientific approach to diagnosis. Acupuncturists use color simply as a part of an overall gage on your health. Your acupuncturist may also look at your family history, do a facial reading, or employ other techniques in order to decide the best course of action for you and your situation.
