All You Want to Know About Headaches

Most people get at least one headache each year. Most headaches last a few hours but some can last as long as a few weeks. The cost of headaches in America can be in the billions. Forty-five million Americans suffer from chronic headaches, which explain the high cost of treating headaches.

Headache pain can vary in different people. You can have a mild or severe headache. Your headache may be on one side or on both sides. The headache may be chronic, or occasional. It can come on suddenly or start slowly. The headache can be throbbing, or a stabbing pain. Headaches can stop you from performing your daily routine or it can be merely an inconvenience.

There are different types of headaches – tension, migraine, and cluster.

Headaches can be caused by disease, environmental factors, trauma, brain or skull malformation, or from expanding blood vessels.

Headaches can occur in children, teens, adults and the elderly. Males and females can both get headaches.

You can get headaches from eating something cold really fast, or from lack of sleep or lack of food. You can get a headache from overdosing on medication. You can get a headache from bright lights or flashing lights, or from loud sounds. Odors or perfume or cigarette smoke can give you a headache.

Headaches can be hormonal occurring pre-menstrual, during your menses, or also during pregnancy. Having a spinal such as with an epidural or when you have a c-section the spinal can make you have a headache. This headache can be severe. Lying down flat can relieve this type of headache.

Headaches can be chronic, fleeting, last for days, or occur during sex. Even certain foods can give you a headache.

Specific conditions can cause headaches such as cough headaches, exercise headaches, external compression headaches, Ice Cream headaches, nighttime headaches, Post-Traumatic Headaches, rebound headaches, secondary headaches, sex headaches, sinus headaches, spinal headaches, tension headaches, thunderclap headaches, weekend headaches, allergy headaches, depression headaches, and psychology headaches.

Clinical trials are always being conducted to study headaches and the types of headaches and what causes them.

There are many journal articles written about the topic of headaches.

There is an organization called the American Headache Society, and a Committee on Headache Education so important is the topic of headache.

Other headache organizations are the American Headache Society, and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.
