Bug Repellant for Camping: Aromatherapy

Camping is a wonderful outdoor activity, however it can quickly turn into a nightmare if you spend the majority of your time swatting insects. It is important that when you are camping to have the necessary equipment. This includes proper clothing, footwear, backpacks, and tents. There is another very necessary piece of equipment that you should always carry with you when camping as well: bug repellant. Bug repellant will help protect you from insect bites. This is very important because insect bites not only sting and itch, but they can carry potentially dangerous germs and viruses that can lead to devastating illnesses.

Campgrounds tend to be in national parks and they offer a host of outdoor activities besides just sleeping in the great outdoors. Activities such as hiking, fishing, and swimming are often included in the campground, or national parks. These activities are wonderful and provide wonderful enjoyment for your camping pleasure, but they also are home to many insects. If you forget to bring your insect repellant, chances are you will not enjoy these activities nearly as much as you would if you were protected from bugs.

Because camping involves sleeping in the outdoors in a tent or camper, you are exposed to many more insects than when you are sleeping in your home. Many campgrounds are now offering more luxuries and comforts. Some campsites have luxuries such as bathrooms and even laundry facilities.

RV camping is the most comfortable form of camping and it offers many luxuries. Some RV campers come equipped with satellite television dishes and Internet connections. However, no matter how many luxuries abound, camping is still about getting in touch with nature, and once you leave the comfort of the camper, you will be exposed to insects. Insect repellant is absolutely necessary to have when camping.

You can use many different herbs and plants that contain natural insect repellant properties. These may be made into air fresheners and sprayed, you can burn Aromatherapy candles that contain insect repelling oils, and you can make your own bug repellant lotions that you can apply directly to your skin. Citronella is one of the most popular natural insect repellents. It is also one of the ingredients found in many insect repellent candles. Pennyroyal, Lavender, and Tea Tree oil are also great natural insect repellents. You can make a spray that is suitable for the skin by diluting Citronella in either carrier oil, or a base of alcohol. You can use alcohol such as Gin or Vodka or Witch Hazel as your base. Simply add 30 drops of Citronella oil to one ounce Gin, Vodka, or Witch Hazel. You can spray this directly on the skin. You can also try Tea Tree oil by using 15 drops of Citronella, and 15 drops of Tea Tree to the Witch Hazel base. Make sure that you follow all of the safety precautions that are listed on the essential oils. You may also want to test the oils on your skin first to be sure that you don’t have any allergic reactions.
