Your Questions About Sleep Number

Daniel asks…

Can a sleep number airbed be put on a slat foundation or does it need a flat base?

I bought just the top part of a sleep number bed and I want to avoid buying the $400 base that Select Comfort sells. I want to get a head board/foot board, but they all seem to come with slats as a foundation for a box spring. Has anyone had luck putting a sleep number bed on a slat base?

health answers:

As long as it has a flat surface to inflate on you should be OK. If your box springs are in good shape and has good even support I would not get the plastic base SC sells. If you didn’t have a good base I’d say get one from SC because they are good and easy to take apart for moving etc. But with a good box spring you should be good to go.

By the way, it’s the best mattress my back has ever had.

Charles asks…

How do you repair a Sleep Comfort or Sleep Number bed that leaks air?

I’ve had two of these beds and both would lose air. It wasn’t the pump. I found the solution to be in repairing and/or replacing the the way the air hoses connect to the pump. The only other solution is replacing the mattresses which is too expensive. If you go to Ebay you can find my solution under Sleep Comfort or Sleep Number beds. I’ve got the solution there with a little yellow book. I’ve found replacement parts that work like a dream.

Carol asks…

Which is better the sleep number bed or the tempur-pedic mattress?

I have a Tempur-Pedic pillow and within a couple of months the pillow flattens out slowly. So I’m wondering will the bed do the same thing within a year or two?
I’ve read a lot of bad things with the sleep number but no one explains why it’s so bad?

health answers:

I don’t know about the Tempur-Pedic bed, but here is my experience with a Sleep Number bed…

We got the Sleep Number 7000 bed a month ago. I absolutely love it. My wife was having back problems with our old innerspring mattress, and after just a couple of nights, her back was feeling so much better.

The thing I like the best about it is that every night before I go to bed, I pump it up to 100 (the firmest) then I lay down and set it to my sleep number (which is 40). It slowly lets the air out and you feel your body slowly sinking into the bed and you can feel the support come up into the curve of your back and it feels like the bed was made specifically for your body.

Another good thing is that there are two separate air chambers so your partner or spouse can have their own firmness and I can have my own.

The main reason we got the 7000 model is because the fabric on the top of this model is a temperature balancing material that helps keep you cool when its hot and warm when its cold.

Another good thing about the sleep number is that it has a 20 year warranty and each piece is individually replaceable, so if one part gets messed up, you can order just that part, you don’t have to wait for a whole new bed. (for example, the pillow top zippers off so you can just replace that.)

You can go to the sleep number store and try the bed out. If you go to a Select Comfort Sleep number store (as opposed to a regular mattress store that carries the sleep number bed) they have a demonstration where you lay on the bed and it is hooked up with sensors to show where your pressure points are, and as the air is released, the pressure points on your body are relieved and it shows it on a computer screen.

Just so you know, you put the bed together your self, but it was really easy to do and the instructions were clear. It took us about 2 hours.

Ours is a California king size and it came in 7 different boxes because we got the foundation which is like a box spring, but it is a durable plastic material that is solid all of the way under the bed to provide the best support for the bed, and we also got the foundation legs (which look really nice by the way). The foundation and legs took 5 boxes alone, so the actual bed was only two boxes.

Another thing is that you have a choice between getting two remotes or one wireless remote. I suggest getting two because with the one wireless remote, if you want to change your firmness in the middle of the night and your partner had the remote last then you either have to wake them up to hand it to you or get up go around to their side of the bed and get it. With the two wireless remotes, you always have your own remote there on your night stand.

Sorry it is such a long answer, but I just wanted to let you know how great the sleep number bed is. Hope this helped. You can check out the sleep number website too, here: www.selectcomfort.com

Donna asks…

Which is better for back problems and for general sleeping – sleep number mattress or memory foam?

Which is better for back problems and for general sleeping-sleep number mattress or memory foam?
I have herniated discs and arthritis in my back. I’ve been told that I should get one of those sleep number mattresses but others say the memory foam is better. Does anyone have personal knowledge?

health answers:

It really depends on the individual and their mobility, tolerance to pressure for those problems etc. Both have their pros and cons.

Memory foam is great for pressure relief and support and lasts for years, while Airbeds you can make needed adjustments in firmness, which can also change support.

It is best we don’t sway your opinion because what we like may not necessarily solve your problems and help you sleep better.

My suggestion is to test various models, by resting on them for 10 – 15 minutes. Winnow your choices to two or three and re-test those to find the one that you like best…

Richard asks…

What do they do with returned from the trial period sleep number beds?

The select comfort and/or sleep number bed companies offer free 30 day in home trial of their mattresses. I’m curious as to what they do with the mattresses that are returned at the end of that trial period. Do they sell them at a discounted price? Outlet store? Clearance Center?

health answers:

Hi
According to the health regulations in my state… They would have to remove all cloth, or fabric materials – and all new materials would have to be used before resale…. The plastic, vinyl or rubber would have to be sanitized…

My guess is that it may be cheaper for them to dispose of them, or donate them to a worthy cause.

I wonder how many of these beds are actually returned under the 30 days trial option…
