Psychiatric Organizations and Their Contributions

There are many organizations that provide support and information for individuals with mental illnesses and their families. These organizations strive to educate communities regarding mental health issues and to gather support for those who suffer from mental illnesses.

There are many local and national organizations some of which are listed below.

NIMH stands for National Institute of Mental Health. They have a Website located at www.nimh.nih.gov/
Psychiatric Organizations
This organization provides information from the Federal agency that actually does the research on mental illnesses.

On this Website you will find information regarding health, research and funding, scientific meetings, clinical trials and publications that are available regarding mental illnesses.

Health information is available regarding anxiety disorders, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorders, bipolar disorder, manic depressive illness, borderline personality disorder, depression, eating disorders, schizophrenia, statistics and more.

NARSAD is the Mental Health Research Association and is a national, not-for-profit organization that has the primary objective of raising funds to help find cures, the causes of and treatments for severe mental illnesses. Their Website can be found at www.narsad.org/


On their Website you will find news stories regarding current mental health events, information about disorders and their conditions, and what research is currently being conducted. There are links to the various mental illnesses that contain information about each illness.

EMHR is the Ethics in Mental Health Research Website and can be found at www.emhr.net/

The purpose of the site is to provide individuals with resources for teaching, studying or the investigation of ethical issues that surround mental health research. The materials they provide are to be used as ethics assessment tools that inform and provide moral development for those individuals concerned with the ethical practices of mental health research.

MHRI is The Mental Health Research Institute of Victoria, Australia. The Website is located at www.mhri.edu.au/home.htm and has the purpose of “improving the diagnosis and treatment of the world’s major mental disorders.”

On the site you will find a section for history, mission, structure, research overview, and other various links that concern mental health including publications, news and events, and also services offered.

MHRN is the UK Mental Health Research Network and has a Website located at www.hmrn.info/dnn/

The purpose of MHRN is to provide support for non-commercial and commercial research into mental health, which also includes clinical trials. The Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London, and the University of Manchester manage it. The UK MHRN coordinates and facilitates large-scale research projects, involve service users and frontline staff, helps to identify mental health research needs, and to help foster the development of research capacity through local, regional and national support. The network hosts clinical research but not individual projects.

These are but a few of the available organizations that are striving to improve upon the treatment and research of mental illnesses.
