What is an Aluminum Free Deodorant? As the name suggests they are deodorants (and anti-perspirants) that are made without the use of aluminum as an ingredient. They are often called natural and even organic deodorants.

The next obvious question is:   Why should I worry about aluminum when choosing a deodorant?

The answer to this largely resolves around the belief/theory that aluminum salts may be linked to different health problems from some forms of cancer to Alzheimer’s. By applying deodorants that contain aluminum you are essentially smearing aluminum salts directly onto your skin where they may be absorbed into the bloodstream or even the lymph system.

At this point in time the linkage with aluminum deodorants to cancer is purely theoretical and no definitive studies exist that have irrefutably proven a causal linkage between the two. However, many people now believe the sensible option is to err on the side of caution and therefore to avoid the use of deodorants that contain aluminum.

Another health concerns when it comes to the use of deodorants are Parabens. Many aluminum free deodorants are also free from a group of chemicals knows as Parabens. Why is that good?

Parabens are very widely used in the cosmetic and toiletries industries as preservatives. They have been linked to a wide range of health problems, notably breast cancer, skin irritation, allergic reactions and interaction with estrogen levels. They have also been linked to accelerated skin aging and damage (particularly win combination with exposure to high levels of sunlight).

Whilse there is a body evidence to support these health of Paraben worries, it is not yet sufficiently robust enough to lead to a ban. Due to the widespread use of this chemical group, the cosmetic industry strongly refutes any linkage between health problems and Parabens. Myself, as a cautious consumer, I am avoiding products which contain such ingredients until the scientific debate is finally settled.

The Main Reasons to Choose Aluminum Free Deodorant

High doses of aluminum are linked to neurotoxicity, altered function of the blood-brain barrier, and many serious health conditions. Studies have shown links to Alzheimer’s disease, breast cancer, and several other problems. Aluminum free deodorant can diminish these risks and help you avoid prolonged or excessive exposure to the metal.

Of course, once you have decided to go aluminum (and Paraben) free, will the aluminum free products meet your deodorising needs? There is some debate as to whether aluminum free products are as effective as those that contain aluminum. I personally use a zinc based deodorant that I find highly effective.

Still, the consensus seems to indicate that overall aluminum free products are not as strong as other deodorants – but I believe you just need to find the right one that fits your normal lifestyle.

However, if you suffer from conditions such as hyperhidrosis where excessive sweating occurs then these products may not be suitable.

    What is Hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis is a condition of excessive sweating occurring in several places on your body such as your hands, feet, armpits or face. Usually associated with anxiety and obesity, excessive sweating in any of these areas can be embarrassing can be.

It is also claimed that many of these often termed “natural” alternatives are not only less effective sweat inhibitors but also more likely to cause skin irritations and rashes, again the evidence for this is anecdotal and no in depth scientific evidence exists.

At the end of the day it boils down to personal choice – if you want to be extra sure about your health and you do not have an excess sweat problem (actually, sweating is actually good for you – it cools the body and helps remove toxins) then your better choice is selecting a Paraben/Aluminum free deodorant.
