How to Have a Healthy Prostate Through Diet

We all know the saying, “you are what you eat”. Basically that saying is trying to make the point that our bodies require nourishment and when we feed our bodies nothing but junk food and high fat/sugar we are not giving our bodies the nutrition needed for health, growth and healing. Our bodies need food for fuel and for cell generation and when food is denied or nutrients are missing our bodies can become diseased. Men can promote good prostate health by eating certain foods such as nuts, fish, onions, garlic, scallions and shallots.

Many experts say that prostate dysfunction is a nutritional disease; this is especially true in the Western countries where animal foods are eaten in greater quantities such as red meat, dairy products, and eggs. Animal foods tend to accumulate environmental toxins where in contrast fruits and vegetables have a more protective effect on the body.

Did you know that selenium is a trace mineral that can actually hinder the growth of cancerous cells in the prostate? Foods that are rich in selenium include Brazil nuts, tuna, Shrimp, and turkey.

Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish such as salmon and sardines can suppress the growth of a tumor once a man has prostate cancer if eaten three times a week.

Other foods that can lower the risk for prostate disease are chopped onions, garlic, scallions and shallots if served uncooked and served raw.

Not only is food important for prostate health but also getting enough water is also important in order to avoid dehydration. Most people need to drink 8 glasses of water a day. How can you tell if you are drinking enough water? If your urine is pale yellow in color than you are drinking enough water. If your urine is clear than you are drinking too much water. If your urine is amber (dark yellow) you are not drinking enough water and need to drink more. When checking the color of your urine, remember that certain vitamins, supplements and even medications can alter the color of your urine, so if you are taking any of these you may not be able to tell if you are drinking enough water this way.

There are plenty of studies that are challenging what we traditionally think of as nutritious foods for instance recent studies suggest that milk may be bad for prostate health because the countries in which men drink the highest quantities of milk also have the highest incidence of prostate cancer. It appears to be the calcium in milk that is the culprit when it comes to prostate cancer.

When men consume tomatoes and tomato-based foods such as pasta sauce, ketchup and also other foods such as watermelon, and pink grapefruit they have lower incidences of prostate cancer. Lucopene the antioxidant found in red foods is available as a nutritional supplement and can be used to help prevent prostate cancer and can also reduce the size of any existing tumors.

Did you know that fructose could also protect a man against prostate cancer? Fructose stimulates the production of a vitamin D form that inhibits the growth of tumors.
