Aromatherapy Therapy

You can personalize your aromatherapy massage by making your own aromatherapy massage blend of oils… Combine relaxing essential oils with a soothing massage to truly experience the healing benefits of essential aromatherapy.

Today, there are hundreds of different essential oils available in the marketplace and virtually anyone can make their own blends to use for massage. While you can go crazy and make hundreds of massage oil combinations. You really do not need to buy too many essential oils to have a successful blend. Approximately 5 essential oils and a carrier oil to dilute the concentrated mixture is enough.

Before you go shopping and are faced with the many choices, it is a good idea to educate yourself first a little about the properties of various essential oils. Some are soothing and relaxing, others are rejuvenating, and many have additional properties of healing. Moreover, not all oils go well together. If you happen to mix two oils that do not “harmonize,” you may not enjoy the smell of what is rubbed all over you.

Once you know which oils to use, a carrier oil is required to dilute the mixture. There are several vegetable oils you can experiment with: Jojoba oil, grapeseed oil, almond oil, olive oil, apricot oil are typical choice. These and others are ideal for massage oil. Some oils are used by massage therapists on their own, without the addition of essential oils. Carrier oils, by themselves, can make great massage oils.

As you make aromatherapy mixtures for massage or other purposes, here are a couple of pointers on which fragrances go well with each other. The floral scents go well together with citrus oils and woody scents. For example, the relaxing properties and smells of lavender, chamomile, ylang-ylang and vanilla is, I think, a perfect mix. If you want to feel uplifted and full of energy at the end of your massage, try using a mixture of peppermint, lemongrass and eucalyptus.

No matter which oils you combine together, you need to remember to dilute properly in the carrier oil. A good rule of thumb is this: For each 1 oz of carrier oil, you should add 10-15 drops of essential oils. Once the oils are properly mixed together, it is best to keep them for a day in a dark (usually brown) bottle, as the true fragrance does not get released immediately. So when blending scents together for an aromatherapy massage oil, you want to make up a batch a day ahead.

Here is a typical recipe for aromatherapy massage oil which is used and loved by many people. Its purpose is geared to soothe and rejuvenate tired muscles and tissues after a hard day's work. I've tried this and it is a delight when rubbed into the skin as well as a joy to your sense of smell.

Start with 4 tablespoons of your carrier oil of choice then add
13 drops of lavender essential oil
5 drops peppermint essential oil
2 drops of rosemary essential oil
4 drops of eucalyptus oil

Add the base oil to the bottle first, and then add, one by one, the drops of each essential oil. You may wish to shake the bottle after adding each separate type and briefly check the fragrance.

Once you start mixing your own blend of massage oil, let your creativity take you where it will. You will soon discover what can and can not be mixed together and what your favorites are. Watch out, though, making your own blends of aromatherapy massage oils can be highly addictive!
